| biography:
| Administrator, born at Shipley Hall, Derbyshire, C England, UK. He became Lieutenant-Governor of Prince Edward I (1837) and Lieutenant-Governor of the Leeward Is (1841–5), and in 1846 was appointed Governor-in-Chief of New South Wales. He recommended to the British parliament that some superior post should be established in Australia to which inter-colony disputes could be referred, and in 1851 he was commissioned ‘Governor-General of All Her Majesty's Australian Possessions’, thus paving the way for the federation of Australian colonies 50 years later. |
