| Actor, born in Lye, Hereford and Worcester, WC England, UK. He served in World War 1 and made his name in Birmingham repertory company's productions of Shaw's plays and in The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934). He also played leading roles in a number of films, including Dreyfus, Things to Come (1931), and The Winslow Boy (1948). He was knighted in 1934, and was Cambridge Rede Lecturer in 1936. |
