| biography:
| Naval officer, born in London, UK. He entered the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1898, and served as a destroyer commander in the Dover Patrol in World War 1. He resigned from the navy after a disagreement in 1938, but was recalled to service on the outbreak of World War 2 and served as flag officer, Dover (1939–42). He directed the Dunkirk evacuation of 338 000 Allied troops in 1940, commanded the British naval forces for the Allied invasion of Sicily (1943), and in 1944 was Allied naval commander-in-chief for the Normandy landings. He was killed in an aircraft accident. |
