| Biophysicist, born in Leipzig, EC Germany. He studied at Leipzig and London, carried out research in London (1935–9) and Sydney (1939–42), and became professor of biophysics at London (1952–78), then an honorary research fellow. Knighted in 1969, in 1970 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his studies on how transmitter substances are released from nerve terminals. |
