| biography:
| English philosopher. He studied at Oxford, and taught in London and Oxford, before being appointed professor of philosophy at London (1964–7). He then became professor of philosophy at Cambridge (1967), provost of King's College, Cambridge, (1979), and professor of philosophy at Oxford (1990–6). His work has been influential in moral philosophy, in particular Morality: an Introduction to Ethics (1972) and Ethics and the Limits of Philosophy (1985). Later works include Making Sense of Humanity (1995). He chaired the Committee on Obscenity and Film Censorship which produced the Williams Report in 1979. He was married (1955–74) to the politician, Shirley Williams. He was knighted in 1999. |
