| Brewer, born in Dublin, Ireland, the grandson of Arthur Guinness (1725–1803), the founder of Guinness's Brewery (1759). He joined the firm at an early age, and became sole owner at his father's death in 1855. Under him the brand of stout became famous, and the business grew into the largest of its kind in the world. He was the first Lord Mayor of Dublin (1851), became an MP (1865–8), and was created a baronet in 1867. |
