| biography:
| British soldier, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. He studied at Oxford, and served under Clinton and Cornwallis in the American War of Independence (1775–83). He was victorious at Waxham Creek (1780), and defeated Gates at Camden, but was beaten by Daniel Morgan (1736–1802) at Cowpens. He held Gloucester till it capitulated (1782), and then returned to England. He was MP for Liverpool (1790–1806, 1807–12). |
