| biography:
| Industrialist, born in Tallinn, Estonia. He emigrated to Australia (1949) and studied at the University of Adelaide. He joined the Western Mining Corporation as an underground surveyor, and later became a technical assistant, general manager (1968–71), manager (1971–88), and chairman (1974–91). He led the Western Mining Corporation through its expansion into gold, and is seen as a leader in the Australian mining industry. He was chairman of BHP, Australia's biggest company (1989–92), and has been the chairman of Alcoa since 1978. He received the gold medal of the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, London, in 1983. He was knighted in 1978. |
