| Playwright, born in London, UK. He studied law, but in 1874 made his debut on the stage in Edinburgh, and in 1875 joined the Lyceum Company. He wrote several farces, but is best known for his social dramas, notably The Second Mrs Tanqueray (1893) and Trelawny of the ‘Wells’ (1898), which made him the most successful playwright of his day. He was knighted in 1909. |
