| Astronomer, born in Kendal, Cumbria, NW England, UK. He studied at Manchester and Cambridge, where he became professor of astronomy (1913) and director of the Cambridge Observatories, working mainly on the internal structure of stars. In 1919 his observations of star positions during a total solar eclipse gave the first direct confirmation of Einstein's general theory of relativity. He became a renowned popularizer of science, notably in The Nature of the Physical World (1928). He was knighted in 1930. |
