| Electrical engineer, born in Newport, Isle of Wight, S England, UK. A major figure in developing techniques for manufacturing radar components, and a pioneer in the development of radio, he studied electrical engineering at Finsbury Technical College and at the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company (later Metropolitan–Vickers) in Manchester, founding the company's research department in 1920. His work on demountable high-power thermionic valves made it possible to establish radar stations in Great Britain by the time World War 2 began in 1939. In the same year, he established at Manchester the second British transmitting station to broadcast on a daily basis. An innovator in engineering education, he was joint author of a number of books on engineering subjects. |
