| New Zealand statesman and Maori scholar, born in Te Araroa, New Zealand. He studied at Canterbury and Auckland universities, and became a lawyer, an MP (1906–43), and a cabinet minister (1928–36). He worked for the economic development of Maori land and for a revival of interest in Maori culture. He was knighted in 1927. |
