| biography:
| Actor and director, born in Ainsdale, Lancashire, NW England, UK. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London, and started in vaudeville, graduating to the Old Vic Company in 1932. After World War 2 he joined the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Company at Stratford-upon-Avon as actor and theatre director (1948–56), where he elevated the company to international standing, and provided much of the foundation work for the creation of the Royal Shakespeare Company (1960). In Europe and America he appeared in several contemporary plays now established as classics, and also had a successful screen career, with roles in many major films, such as Lawrence of Arabia (1962). He founded the Compass Theatre Company in 1982. |
