| Portrait painter, born in Utrecht, The Netherlands. In 1547 he entered the Antwerp Guild of St Luke. He visited Italy, Spain, and (1553) England. An eminent portraitist, he painted Queen Mary I for her bridegroom, Philip II of Spain, for which it is believed he was knighted. From c.1568 he lived in Antwerp. |
