| Conductor, born in Budapest, Hungary. He studied at the Liszt Academy and Vienna University, after which he worked with the Budapest Royal Opera, where he made his conducting debut (1924). He worked with the Dresden Opera (1928), and the Münster State Opera (1929–32), after which he spent several years touring. Following his US debut (1937), he became musical director of the new American Ballet Theatre. He established an international career, and was appointed senior conductor of the London Royal Philharmonic (1975–9). His autobiography, Notes of Seven Decades was published in 1979, and he was knighted in 1984. |
