| biography:
| Mauritian politician and prime minister (1982–95, 2000– ). After qualifying as a barrister in London (1954), he returned to Mauritius and was elected to the Legislative Council (1963) in the period before full independence in 1968. In 1970 he co-founded the Socialist Mauritius Militant Movement (MMM), from which he later broke away to form his own Mauritius Socialist Party (PSM); and in 1982 he became prime minister at the head of a PSM–MMM alliance. In 1983 his Party was reconstituted as the Mauritius Socialist Movement, with a pledge to make the country a republic within the Commonwealth. The 1991 election gave his ruling coalition sufficient majority to pass the bill to sever ties with the British monarchy, effective from 1992. His party lost the general election of 1995. He again became prime minister in 2000. |
