| Civil engineer, born near Dundee, E Scotland, UK. He was in the fifth generation of a family very involved in civil engineering since the 18th-c. He joined the firm of Easton Gibb & Son in 1900, worked on the construction of Rosyth naval dockyard (1909–16), then after five years in government posts set up in practice as a consulting engineer. His firm became one of the world's largest, their work at home and abroad including hydro-electric schemes, bridges, docks, and harbours. |
