| Conductor, born in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, C Scotland, UK. He studied at Glasgow University and the Royal College of Music in London. He became principal conductor and artistic director of the Scottish National Orchestra (1959), helped to form Scottish Opera (1962), and as its artistic director was responsible for many notable successes, such as the first complete performance of Berlioz's Les Troyens in 1969. |
