| biography:
| Football player and manager, born in Glasgow, W Scotland, UK. He began playing with Queens Park Rangers (1958–68) before joining a number of Scottish clubs. As a manager (from 1974), he had success with Aberdeen (1978–86), including the European Cup Winners' Cup (1983), the Super Cup (1983), the Scottish FA Cup four times, and the League Cup (1985). He then took over at Manchester United (1986– ), in the 1998–9 season leading his team to the treble of the Premier League championship, the FA Cup, and the European Cup - the first manager of a British side to achieve this feat. He was knighted in 1999. |
