| British politician and writer, born in Elstead, Surrey, SE England, UK. He studied at Oxford. Having established himself even while at school as a witty writer of verses, he joined Punch in 1924. His first theatrical success, Riverside Nights (1926), was followed by a series of brilliant libretti for comic operas, including La Vie Parisienne (1929) and Bless the Bride (1947). He was also the author of several successful novels, notably The Secret Battle (1919), The Water Gipsies (1930), and Holy Deadlock (1934). He became an MP (1935–50), introduced a marriage bill in the House of Commons that became law as the Matrimonial Causes Act (1938), and did much to amend divorce laws in England. He was knighted in 1945. |
