| Film director and actor, born in London, UK. He began his career in advertising, then progressed via script writing to directing short films. He made his feature-length cinema debut with Bugsy Malone (1976). Later films include Midnight Express (1978), Birdy (1985), The Commitments (1991, BAFTA best film and director), Evita (1996), Angela's Ashes (1998), and The Life of David Gale (2002). He received a knighthood in 2001. |
