| biography:
| British naval commander, the brother of Sir Alan Cunningham. He trained at Dartmouth, and entered the navy in 1898. In World War 2 he was admiral commander-in-chief of British naval forces in the Mediterranean (1939–43), and commanded Allied naval forces for the invasion of North Africa (1942) and Italy (1942). He was promoted Admiral of the Fleet in 1943, and was First Sea Lord (1943–6). |
