| Actress, born in Belfast, NE Northern Ireland, UK. She studied at University College, Galway, and made her stage debut at the Gaelic-language An Taibhdhearc Theatre (1940). She performed with the Abbey Theatre, Dublin (1943–6), and after her London debut (1947) she worked in Britain and North America. Her role as Pegeen Mike in The Playboy of the Western World at the Edinburgh Theatre Festival (1951) brought her international fame. An intensely dramatic actress, she is particularly remembered for her performance as Saint Joan in London (1954). Throughout her career she worked primarily on the Irish stage, and was appointed to the Council of State of the Republic of Ireland in 1975. |
