| Actor-singer, born in Monsummano Alto, NWC Italy. He worked at a variety of jobs before performing as a singer and impressionist in Marseille and Paris. A protégé of Edith Piaf, he made his film debut with her in Etoile sans lumière (1946, Star Without Light). He appeared in Le Salaire de la peur (1953, The Wages of Fear), and ventured abroad for such films as Let's Make Love (1960). His acting reputation was enhanced by an association with the director Constantin Costa-Gavras in such films as Z (1968) and L'Aveu (1970, The Confession). He was married to actress Simone Signoret from 1951 until her death in 1985. In the 1980s he became a distinguished elder statesman of the French film industry, his films including Jean de Florette and Manon des sources (both 1986). |
