| Baseball player, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. During his 20-year career as an outfielder (1924–44), primarily with the Philadelphia Athletics, he posted a lifetime batting average of ·334 and hit 307 home runs. He earned his nickname because he tended to stride away from a pitched ball. He was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1953. |
