| Mathematician, born in Pithiviers, C France. He studied medicine, then turned to mathematics, studying under Laplace and Lagrange, and became professor at the Ecole Polytechnique in 1806. He is known for his research into celestial mechanics, electromagnetism, and also probability, where he established the law governing the distribution of rare and randomly occurring events (the Poisson distribution). |
