| biography:
| Newspaper publisher, born in Cortland, New York, USA. After working on the New York Morning Telegraph (1896–1905), he founded Variety, a weekly paper dedicated to show business. It soon became an institution, respected for both its dollars-and-cents approach to the business and its Runyonesque approach to shows. Its slangy and often original style added many words to the language, and he remained its publisher and editor to his death. He died right after he had begun a Hollywood edition of his paper. |
