| Italian politician, born in Bomba, Abruzzo, E Italy. He took part in the 1848 Neapolitan risings and advocated Neapolitan partcipation in the Independence war. He was a founder of the Unità Italiana (Italian Unity) secret society, for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Bourbons. This was commuted to exile in 1859, but he was back in Naples the same year, and became a deputy of the right in the new Italian parliament from 1862. Among various ministerial posts his main achievement was the standardization of the rail network. |
