| biography:
| Operatic soprano, born in New York City, USA. After a varied and remarkable career as a child star, she made her operatic debut in 1947, but did not attract wide notice until 1966 when she took the part of Cleopatra in Handel's Giulio Cesare. A dramatically gifted coloratura, she retired from the stage in 1979, becoming general director of New York City Opera. An autobiography, Bubbles: a Self-Portrait, appeared in 1976. |
