| biography:
| Scholar, born in Vatnsdalur, N Iceland. He studied at Copenhagen and Oxford, and became professor of Old Icelandic literature at the new University of Iceland (1918–45), and professor of poetry at Harvard (1931–2). He was Icelandic ambassador to Denmark (1951–7). His Islenzk Menning I (1942, Icelandic Culture I), had a profound impact, and he founded the Islenzk Fornrit series of literary editions of the sagas. He also published some poetry, a play, and a collection of short stories. |
