| Norwegian novelist, born in Kalundborg, C Denmark. She worked in an office for 10 years, then turned to writing. Her major novels were Kristin Lavransdatter (1920–2), a 14th-c trilogy, followed by a series Olav Audunssön (4 vols, 1925–7). She became a Catholic in 1924, which influenced her later work, most of which had contemporary settings. She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928. An ardent anti-Nazi, her works were blacklisted in Germany during the Nazi period. |
