| Social anthropologist, born in Vienna, Austria. He studied psychology and philosophy at Vienna University before moving to the London School of Economics to study anthropology under Malinowski. He taught at Durham (1948–50), then became professor at Canberra University, Australia (1950–6). He carried out fieldwork among the Nupe in N Nigeria (1934–6) and the Nuba of the Sudan (1938–40).
