| Novelist, born in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye, France. Her early books were written in collaboration with her first husband, Henri Gauthier-Villars (pseudonym Willy); after their divorce in 1906 she appeared in music halls in dance and mime, then settled as a writer. Her novels include the ‘Claudine’ series (1900–3), Chéri (1920), and Gigi (1944). In 1912 she married Henry de Jouvenel, and in 1935, Maurice Goudeket. She won many awards for her work, and became a legendary figure in Paris. |
