| Economist, broker, and writer, born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA. The son of musicians, he studied at Harvard (1923) and, in the midst of the Great Depression, set up his own bond trading house (1932). He joined Salomon Brothers in 1961, organized the firm's first bond research department, and retired as a partner and chief economist in 1972. He became known as ‘the Bard of Wall Street’ for his colourful treatment of usually dry economic subjects. His History of Interest Rates: 2000BC to the Present appeared in 1963. |
