| biography:
| Dutch politician, born in Ulrum, N Netherlands. He trained as a tropical agriculturist and worked as a tea planter in Java in 1931–6. Back in the Netherlands he took up farming and joined the SDAP (Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij), joined the resistance in World War 2, and became a member of the PvdA (Partij van de Arbeid) in 1946. He was minister of agriculture (1945–57) and vice-chairman of the EEC Commission from 1 Jan 1958, and as such was responsible for the Mansholt Plan for a Common Agricultural Policy in 1963. Later he was president of the Economic Committee of the EEC (1972–3). |
