| Novelist and short story writer, born in Toyko, Japan. He graduated in French literature from Keio University, then studied for several years in Lyon. Widely regarded as the leading writer in Japan, he was elected to the Nihon Geijutsuin, the Japanese Arts Academy, in 1981. His books include (trans titles) Silence (1966), The Sea and Poison (1972), Wonderful Fool (1974), Volcano (1978), When I Whistle (1979), and Stained Glass Elegies (1984). |
