| Singer and entertainer, born in Tiger Bay, Cardiff, S Wales, UK. The youngest of seven children, she left school at 15 and worked in a factory while performing at local working men's clubs at the weekends. She soon turned professional, had a number of UK hit singles, and went on to international success spanning four decades. Her best-known songs include ‘As Long as He Needs Me’ (1960), ‘What Now My Love’ (1962), ‘I, Who Have Nothing’ (1963), ‘Goldfinger’ (1964), ‘Big Spender’ (1967), ‘Something’ (1970), and ‘Diamonds are Forever’ (1971). Among her many awards, she was voted Show Business Personality of the Year in 1995 by the Variety Club of Great Britain. |
