| biography:
| Athlete, born in Guildford, Western Australia. She was the first Australian woman to win an Olympic medal, and went on to win seven more, including a gold medal at the 80 m hurdles in a world record time of 10·9 s in 1952, and again in 1956, adding a third gold and another world record at 4 x 100 m. At the Empire Games in 1950 she secured three gold medals, in the hurdles and the relays, and two silvers at both the 100 y and 220 y. She was Australian champion in 1950, 1952, and 1956, and set a career total of nine world records. |
