| Reputed prophetess, born near Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, N England, UK. First mentioned in a tract of 1641as prophesying the death of Cardinal Wolsey and others, an account of her, the Life and Death of Mother Shipton was brought out by Richard Head in 1667. Additions, including predictions of the steam-engine and the telegraph were added by Charles Hindley in 1862. There are spurious memorial stones to her in York and Somerset. A small British moth, with wing-markings resembling a witch's face, is named after her. |
