| Cell biologist, born in London, UK. He went to the USA in 1948 as a graduate student. He taught and performed research at the University of Washington School of Medicine (1951–3), Tokyo Metropolitan University (1953–4), the University of Rochester (1954–9), Dartmouth Medical School (1959–66), and the University of Pennsylvania (1966–89), and was concurrently affiliated with the Marine Biology Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA (from 1961). He made major contributions to submicroscopic cell morphology and physiology, and held several patents in optical equipment. |
