| biography:
| Biographer and defender of Oscar Wilde, the great-grandson of William Wordsworth. He lived most of his life in France and Corsica, and wrote lives of Zola, Daudet, and Maupassant, all of whom he had known. He befriended Oscar Wilde in 1883 and, although deeply shocked by the Wilde scandal, stood by him and wrote several books and pamphlets in his favour, most notably Oscar Wilde: the Story of an Unhappy Friendship (1902). |
