| biography:
| Anglican clergyman and pacifist, born in Windsor, S England, UK. A popular preacher with distinctly modern views on the Christian life, he was a pioneer of religious broadcasting. Vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London (1914–27), he published The Human Parson (1927) and The Impatience of a Parson (1927). He later became Dean of Canterbury (1929–31), and canon of St Paul's Cathedral (1934–7). An ardent pacifist, he founded the Peace Pledge Union in 1936. |
