| biography:
| Lebanese politician, a member of the Maronite Christian community of Lebanon, the father of Amin and Bashir Gamayel. He studied at Beirut and Paris, and trained as a pharmacist. In 1936 he founded the Kataeb or Phalangist Party, modelled on the Spanish and German Fascist organizations, and in 1937 became its leader. He was twice imprisoned (1937, 1943), held various ministerial posts (1960–7), and led the Phalangist militia in the 1975–6 civil war. |
