| biography:
| Lebanese army officer and statesman, the brother of Amin Gamayel. He joined the militia of his father's Phalangist Party, and came to be the Party's political director in the Ashrefieh sector of E Beirut, where he was an active leader of the Christian militia in the civil war of 1975–6. By the systematic elimination of rivals he came to command the military forces of E Beirut. He distanced his party from Israeli support, and aimed to expel all foreign influence from Lebanese affairs. Having twice escaped assassination, he was killed in a bomb explosion while still president-elect. |
