| biography:
| Clarinet player and bandleader, born in New York City, USA. He turned professional in 1925, and gained popularity during the 1930s, becoming internationally known after recording ‘Begin the Beguine’ (Cole Porter). Other hits include ‘Stardust’ (1940) and ‘Moonglow’ (1941). Although a gifted jazz musician, his public appearances were erratic, and died away during the 1950s. He wrote an autobiography, The Trouble with Cinderella in 1952. He married eight times, always to a well-known beauty, including actresses Lana Turner, Ava Gardner, and Evelyn Keyes. He quit music altogether in 1955. |
