| King of Persia (309–79). He was declared king at his birth by the Persian nobility, and ruled with the help of regents until the age of 16. Under him the Sassanian empire reached its zenith. He successfully challenged Roman control of the Middle East, forcing Jovian to cede five provinces to him (363), and establishing Persian control over Armenia. |
