| biography:
| British writer and campaigner for women's rights. She founded the first Shelter for Battered Wives and their children in London (1971), and campaigned for legal protection and resources to help women and children to escape from violent men. Her book Scream Quietly or the Neighbours Will Hear encouraged national discussion of what had previously been a hidden problem. Her later book, Prone to Violence (1982), suggesting some women are responsible for the violent treatment they suffer, damaged her image as a defender of battered women. |
