| US astronaut and biochemist. In 1996 she set a new record for the longest US space mission (188 days) in orbit aboard the Mir space station. The distance she travelled during that time was equivalent to roughly half the distance between the Earth and the Sun. She became the first woman to be awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. |
