| First prime minister (1972–5) and president (1975) of Bangladesh, born in Tongipara, S Bangladesh (formerly East Bengal). After studying law at Dacca, he helped found the Awami League (1949). In 1954 he was elected to the East Pakistan Provincial Assembly, and took an opposition role during the 1960s. In 1966 he was arrested and imprisoned for two years for provoking separatism. After winning an overall majority in the Pakistani elections of 1970, but being denied office, he launched a non-co-operation campaign which escalated into civil war and the creation of Bangladesh. After becoming president in 1975, he and his wife were assassinated in a military coup. |
