| biography:
| Last of the Mughal emperors of India (1658–1707), the third son of Emperor Shah Jahan. When Shah Jahan became seriously ill in 1657, Aurangszeb defeated his brothers and confined his father, beginning his rule without formal coronation in 1658. During his long reign, the empire remained outwardly prosperous and extended its boundaries, but his puritanical and narrow outlook alienated the various communities, particularly the Hindus, whom he treated with great harshness. Opposed by his own rebellious sons and by the Mahratta empire in the S, he died a fugitive at Ahmadnagar. |
